
NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 28 – Prevailing drought in the country has pushed inflation to a 58-month high as it hits 11.48 percent in April compared to 10.28 percent in March 2017.
Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics indicate that the year on year food inflation hit 20.98 percent in the month under review.
Food and Non – Alcoholic drinks went up by 3.55 percent mainly attributable to increases in the prices of food items that include Sukuma Wiki, Spinach, milk, potatoes, onions and maize grain.
Housing water electricity and Gas Indexes went up by 0.63 percent despite a decrease in Kerosene prices.
Transport indices, however, went down by 0.22 percent in the period under review owing to the decrease in fuel pump prices.
Sukuma Wiki recorded the highest jump in prices by 63 percent to Sh62.49 per kilogramme compared to Sh38.27 same month last year.
It is followed by Cabbages, which rose 54.84 percent to Sh85.39 for a kilo.
