NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 21 – Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) has invested Sh300 million in a water treatment plant with a capacity of recycling 240,000 litres per hour.
The state of the art water treatment plant is set to significantly improve operational efficiency and water supply within the production site of the firm.
The water treatment is able to reduce the amount of water abstracted as well as replenish both ground and surface water resources.
KBL Supply Chain Director Patrick Kamugi will help the firm save about 300, 000 litres of water a day out of the 6 to 8 million litres of water used daily.
“Water is one an essential ingredient in all our brands; we also use water within our factory for cleaning cooling, heating and pasteurizing. It is also necessary for growing the materials we use to create our brands. Efficient management of water is therefore of utmost importance to us and our communities,” Kamugi notes.
Kamugi says the plant can be expanded to 360,000 litres per hour capacity with a capacity of five million litres a day.
Currently, Nairobi County water deficit stands at 30 percent and water supply in Nairobi is estimated to be 20 percent below total demand.
If the current trends continue, water deficit is expected to be more than 60 percent by 2035.
WaterAid Global estimates that over 17 million Kenyans do not have access to safe water, a situation that continues to hinder growth and development across the country.
