Since Thursday, November 14, 2013, the airline’s flight KQ 410-EBB, KQ 482-DAR, KQ 760 -JNB and KQ 762 -JNB departing to Entebbe, Dar es Salaam and Johannesburg respectively have been operating from Unit One.
They had been relocated to Unit Two following a dawn fire that destroyed a section of the airport four months ago.
Kenya Airways’ Chief Operating Officer Mbuvi Ngunze said that the relocation of the airlines’ operations and changes in the check-in counters for the four flights were expected to balance the distribution of passengers at Unit One and Two to ensure good coordination and optimisation of its resources
“This directive is an attempt to improve the quality of services and facilities for passengers. Changes in check-in counters for these flights are aimed at helping us to better serve our customers by ensuring greater convenience and comfort,” Ngunze added.
Currently, Unit Two handles all the international departures with Unit Three handling the domestic departures and arrivals.
All international arrivals are at the JKIA Parking Garage, which has been converted into a temporary arrival terminal.
The airline has also increased frequency to 11 destinations during the month of December as the airline prepares for an anticipated surge in demand on these routes during the festive season.
Among the domestic destinations to which Kenya Airways will fly to frequently are: Malindi, to which it will fly seven times every week, up from the current six times; and Mombasa, to which it will fly 88 times, which is 11 frequencies more than it does currently.
Regionally, the airline increased flights to Kilimanjaro in Tanzania from the current five times to seven times weekly; and to Juba in South Sudan from the current 12 every week, to 19 times.
The national carrier will also be flying to Gaborone in Botswana five times a week, up from the current three times; flights to Antananarivo in Madagascar seven times weekly, up from the current four times; and to Seychelles four times a week from the current three times.
This comes as the airport got a part-payment of Sh500 million from APA Insurance following the fire that destroyed the international arrivals.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) expects a final claim of up to Sh2.4 billion.
